I think I just got duped from buying argan oil online.  The product was obviously a fake because it was not absorbed by OCM cleansed skin the first time I tried it. God bless OCM!  It seems the product I bought was mixed with sunflower oil as carrier oil because doing the same with my  current HHN sunflower oil on hand, the effect was essentially the same, the rate of absorption was the same, the HHN sunflower oil was even absorbed faster when I swatched it together.  I should have known better but it was really difficult to detect if it was bought online, what a waste of money. I was even planning to make it as a gift. It is true, you can not get good, authentic argan oil at such an incredibly low price.

Talking about oils, I just got back from San Francisco, Agusan del Norte this morning via Butuan. My last encounter with that town was my first EIA assignment for Jollibee Foods Corporation in 2008 when I prepared the Initial Environmental Examination of Jollibee San Francisco.  I haven’t had the time to visit that store located at the town proper similar to what I did with  Jollibee Buhangin Davao, I do feel a bit awkward dropping by and saying hi or hello to the  store managers and checking their current environmental compliance status and asking for difficulties communicating with the corporate office. That was my job five years ago, my job right now is for an ISO audit.

From Butuan City, we went straight ahead to one of the only Palm Oil Plantations here in the Philippines.  Inside it was a Palm Oil Refinery and the palm olein we use in our kitchen is heat processed.  I just read about cosmetic grade oils and food grade oils that we are supposed to eat. Heat processing kills microorganisms that might affect the food supply but it also reduces the cosmetic efficacy of most oils we use.  Palm oil may be good at deep frying food stuff but it is highly not recommended as oil for OCM.

Though I was duped for buying argan oil online, I am now one of the people who swear by the fact that OCM did work for me after a month. One or two pimple broke out in my nose and my sideburns but generally my skin had somewhat improved.  My OCM mixture is not exact. I transferred the castor oil in a 100 ml pump bottle, I would make two small pumps of castor oil and two pumps of HHN sunflower cleansing oil which was more generous in amount and use it as my cleanser every evening.  After the steaming and wiping with a hot washcloth I still use my TFS E’thym Moisture Lotion as moisturizer.   I am still stuck with my conventional moisturizer, I am currently testing rosehip oil and argan oil in place of it but I was duped from buying online.

This is actually not a beauty blog, I am not a beauty blogger who test products and make reviews but at this point I am trying to make this post light and selfie…it seems I am onto acronyms. OCM for Oil Cleansing Method, HHN for Human Heart Nature and TFS for the The Face Shop all related to beauty and skincare.

I want to mention something about RSPO or the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.   RSPO is a council of palm oil producing countries, companies and stakeholders based in Malaysia to ensure that palm oil that is sold in the market did not cause forest degradation, habitat loss or caused suffering to local communities. The organization is currently being attacked for its failure to prevent farmers or growers in Sumatra to convert more land into palm oil plantations and eventually caused another Southeast Asian Haze.

If there is a global RSPO organization, there is a CARP here in the Philippines or the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.  Many lands are idle in Mindanao, not forest lands but alienable and disposable lands with certificate of titles that are unproductive.  Can a smallholder palm plantation work for these types of land?   http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/323541/news/regions/tanker-loaded-with-palm-oil-runs-aground-off-palawan We’ve got a big demand for food grade palm oil based on the importation and smuggling that is currently happening.

Another acronym is PDAF or Priority Development Assessment Fund which is the hottest of all the acronyms  I mentioned…to note this is not a political blog.  Oils are either heat processed or cold pressed.

The Pig is Getting Big

I guess this opensource pig was the source of that pig  which won the logo design contest when I was still spending my time with the Philippine Methane Initiative. I haven’t had any connection with my former colleagues but one thing’s for sure, pig waste and manure management have always had a big potential towards emission reduction projects that can be sold in the carbon markets.

For this year, I have experienced very minimal opportunities of dipping into the carbon markets, though I have planned a great snow dive a few years back, there just seems to be no big ocean to dive on. It forces me to become cautious because I might get injured if I dived into shallow waters, especially if that guy on that cubicle is making the pool  more crowded. No bones being broken please! I do miss emission reduction project developments. Though my prior experience was limited to capacity building on making technical people understand what the carbon markets was all about, it was one heck of a great fun! I really do miss this pig quite a while.

A greenwash encounter… how should I put this?

How should I put this?

Do I have any sense of pride for being once associated in the fast food industry? Maybe yes, maybe no, maybe its too early to tell.  But what I can remember is that I worked really hard in the engineering department not in the sales and marketing department or did anything for corporate image building.  I was just a lowly specialist striving for environmental compliance in a somewhat challenging industry.

Blogging about what  got me started me into blogging is quite timely at the moment, with the cyber crime law  making the headlines.  Though some may not be totally affected, I do feel that blogging will present to me some criminal risks. Do I need to have a good lawyer since I have risked setting up a blog?

Well, I am not bad mouthing any fast food chain, what I am implying is that there is such a standard called ISO 14020 which presents guidelines  for organizations to produce environmental claims related to their product. At this point in time, we really do not know if the Life Cycle Environmental Impact of paper packaging truly has less environmental impact than plastic packaging. Honestly we really don’t know. It is a big no no to claim something that is fully surrounded by uncertainty.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in paper packaging manufacturing facility in Mindanao and our technical specialist mentioned about the eco-labeling program of the Philippines. the “Green Choice” which is virtually underfunded and struggling with its day to day operations, yet corporate entities can freely express their environmental claim without validation.

Dreams

I arrived this morning from Davao City delayed by more than two hours at 0230 in the morning after a five hour drive from Bukidnon Province. Fresh from the news,  China is claiming as part of its territory the Philippines and banana exports to China have been quite difficult. Maybe the Chinese market should require the carbon footprint of its banana imports.

Running late to our flight back to Manila, we have no other option but to eat at Jollibee and along the way was Jollibee Buhangin Davao.

One of my last projects in Jollibee was the EIA preparation of Jollibee Buhangin in Davao City in 2009. It did feel somewhat unreal (or maybe just the tiredness) that something I only saw in paper was operational and finally  I was the user of the facility, basically its customer. I still kept the EIA draft and its plans.  I can trace from these records where the waste water will flow and where it was sourced.  There might be some changes after three years in operation though given the dynamic nature of fast food stores.

On my way to Davao four days before, I happen to come across a former colleague from Jollibee who was supervising the construction of another store in a mall. I just reminded him to secure the ECC of the mall and if there is none, the corporate EIA preparation cycle sets in.

Preparing an ex-ante Environmental Impact Assessment is very simple, you just need to prepare a good report, given the scale of a project, a concise project description can suffice. However,  I never dreamed to perform something like that for the rest of my life, you can really outgrow something and now performing audits, I have seen the short-comings of proposed EIA reports against the needed environmental controls in an actual operation, there are times when it was overdone, but often it is under. Compliance however is a dynamic continuous process.

Someone once told me that I should now start selling our property because people now still do not have an idea that climate change will soon impact our community and what was once land will soon be water reclaimed by sea. It was quite depressing because I believe what he said was true, if the value of the Boulevard 2000 project is 100,000.00 per square meter, that will be devalued once the sea level starts to rise. It would be very easy to sell now because most people could not foresee the impacts of Climate Change in the city. For most, value today is better than value for the future…but as taught by Prof. Cielito Habito, true and sincere development is sustainable development.

Most of the local people I know in my community have no idea what Climate Change is and my family have repeatedly insulted my intelligence because they do not understand what my work is all about.  They do not speak to me yet they make assumptions about who I am.   I barely could speak to someone with a global perspective. All they can think about is power and how to stay in power. Lack of awareness is contagious, any dumbass can rise to power and force upon their misconceptions to everyone and I know most local governments face the same scenario where nothing happens because rather than strive for continual improvement, maintaining the status quo is far more important.We do not need piece meal ordinances that do not serve the good of the majority, what a city needs is a Strategic Environmental Plan, identifying significant environmental impacts through a strategic environmental assessment.

I truly appreciate Hong Kong, however Gina Lopez brainwashes us that we could never be like Hong Kong or Singapore.  First, Hong Kong implements an ecosystem compensation scheme where as a condition for proponents, environmental restoration efforts shall be implemented equal to the environmental costs of any development. The advantage of Hong Kong is that it has a mature environmental impact assessment system that considers the full economic costs and benefits of a development proposal. They have to do this because they have limited resources.

The article I shared from the PDI is full of misconceptions, that has been the style of Philippine Media. Less substance and more showbiz with bits and pieces of insignificance. Education is slowly degrading…critical thinking is considered an ingratitude, forcing upon us dumbness to the maximum level.

I would like to share the announcement of the World Resources Institute. Local government who are partners of ICLEI are now starting to develop and implement GHG inventories. I do not know anyone from my community would appreciates it or would make a comment.   It is like I am living an oxymoron, I am trying my best to become a GHG verifier yet I live in a City that would truly fail in such international standard because policy-makers are not aware of the basics of sustainable development, something as basic as thinking about the future of our children.

Vicious cycle!

Three years ago,  I was part of the LLDA Technical Working Group (TWG) for the development of effluent standards for the industry. The point of the TWG was to develop specific effluent standards applicable to the quick serve restaurant.  I am not sure if such standards were really developed. BOD of 1000 mg/L has been common among QSR and other restaurant establishment, but the point is efforts within the facilities must be implemented or any means of pollution prevention must be integrated in the system prior to final discharge.  The QSR group is lobbying for raising the lowering the effluent standard from 50 mg/L BOD to 500 mg/L BOD. Since it is more than three years and I have no communication with the people involved in the TWG, I am not sure what progress has been made.
